Nokia tries to regain RI market with high hopes
Nokia Indonesia officially introduced their Windows-run smartphones, the
Lumia 800 and 710, to the Indonesian market on Friday, with company
executives claiming that the “Lumia is here to stay”.
Although
Nokia rules around half of the feature phone market, Nokia faces tough
competition from Blackberry and Android-based devices in the smartphone
segment.
“We are doing so well that before this pre-lauch period
has ended, we have sold out all the units,” Nokia Indonesia President
Director Martin Chirotarrab said.
Although he declined to mention
the first day’s sales figures, hundreds of people were seen lining up
at the Nokia booth in a Central Jakarta mall.
Hendra, one of the
first buyers of the Lumia 800, said that he had spent the night at the
mall to be first in line. He added that the phone interested him because
he was a fan of the Windows operating system.
“The design is also simple and ergonomic, making the phone comfortable to grip,” he said.
According to Martin, the difference between the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 largely lied in price points and design.
“The
Nokia Lumia 710 is more youthful and affordable,” he said, adding that
buyers could change the rear cover of the Lumia 710 — a characteristic
of many Nokia phones in the past.
During the launch, the Lumia
800 was priced slightly above Rp 5 million (US$555) while the Lumia 710
was sold at closer to Rp 3 million.
Neil Gordon, Nokia’s sales
vice president for Southeast Asia, added that the phone maker was
“investing in retail and channel partners” to push the smartphones into
the local market.
He added that to promote the smartphones, Nokia
has prepared models for customers to test drive at Nokia stores and
their retail partners. Nokia Indonesia’s retail partners include OkeShop
and Erafone.
“We want to make sure that when a customer comes
to a retail store to buy a Lumia, there are live devices through which
customers can experience these phones,” he said.
Andrea Facchini,
marketing director of Nokia Indonesia, added that Finnish mobile phone
manufacturer has partnered with mobile phone operator XL Axiata and Bank
Mandiri in marketing the Lumia series across Indonesia.
Customers
who purchase the Lumia series bundled with XL services in the first
three months after the launch could use XL Internet services for free
for one year. Meanwhile, those paying with Bank Mandiri credit cards
would be given price cuts.
Bundling promotions as well as credit
card promotions have become commonplace in selling devices. XL has
previously offered bundling promotions for iPhone 4S purchases.
“We
know how big Indonesia is and how important it is to move out into
Surabaya, Medan and many other cities to bring the [Nokia] experience
into these areas,” Andrea said.
Nokia launches Lumia 800, 710 in Indonesia
Nokia Indonesia officially launched its first Windows smartphones, the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710, on Friday.
"Strategically speaking, we launch these first Windows phones in Indonesia one year after we announced our collaboration with Microsoft," Nokia Indonesia President Director Martin Chirotarrab said.Andreas Diantoro, the president director of Microsoft Indonesia, predicted that Marketplace Indonesia - the Windows application store - would soon be filled with local applications.
"This is a positive start for the Marketplace in Indonesia," he said.
Nokia Indonesia will follow the launch with a special sale on Friday and Saturday at a mall in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
